Broken Arrow Well this weekend allowed me to finish tearing down the Northstar, cleaning and inspecting. |
Look what I found. 2 cracks. One in the cylinder liner, and one in the block aluminum surround. Not good |
Close up of the cracks.
Closer |
It goes down into the cylinder about 1 inch |
The rest of the engine looks awesome. |
The 10 gazillion pound gorilla, otherwise known as the 4T80E transaxle |
The block |
The heads and 32 valves |
Why not a LS1? 4 valves per cylinder, that is why. |
The exhaust ports. |
The block is actually 3 sections, the top part holds the cylinders, the middle part holds the crank and the bottom is the oil pan. |
A better view of the cracks. |
Very nice cross hatching on the #2 cylinder. |
I rewelded the subframe with a real welder today. I feel much better about my welds. |
I can't find the urethane bushings that I need. So I am going to make some new suspension bushings using some urethane stock. |
I put the car on 4 jackstands. It is now on level ground for the first time in a few years. Now I can complete the roll cage installation. |
I can actually install the engine from the top now. |
This is the High & Tight rear strut tower bar. This will be TIG welded. The stresses that will be applied to this bar will be more than the stock AW11. Especially now that the bar is also used to control engine movement. |
This is the angle they will need to be welded at. |
The engine frame installed |
This mess will be cleaned up. |
I am going to weld on a new chassis mount at this point that will attach to the chassis rail. I feel safer with the added attachments. |
