Got an early start. Though everything was frozen this morning I waited until the windshields thawed to start work. Within the hour I was down to T-shirt and pants. Damn it was nice.
Carl Crawford told me the first thing that needs to be done is the fit the intake system. Well it fits... barely. |
2
I started the engine mount. This is the rear mount from the Toyota Corolla Leven AE101. It is pretty heavy duty while still fitting in the stock AW11 passenger side engine mount bracket. I had to cut a lot of metal off of this mount. |
3
Here is the K&N Super Duty air filter installed. Yes it is large and it will breath very well. |
4
I wanted to mount this bad boy straight off the throttlebody. But due to some of the throttle possition sensors and other electronics that can not be moved, I had to think outside the box. So I just flipped the stock air inlet pipe. |
5
I cut the hole for the exhaust. Unlike normal MR2s, this will have two pipes coming in here. I made the hole a bit larger so I can have access to the exhaust manifold without dropping the engine. |
6
I pulled the engine further back and into place, This now gives me room for the cooling system and heating system hoses. |
7
Much more room now. I'll even be able to insulate the panel that will cover that large hole. This will make Aimee (The Wife) happy.
8
Much better position. The drive shafts are now lined up with the hubs. |
9
This is the hole that was cut. It still needs trimmed. I am thinking that since I will probably use the stock AW11 fuel tank now, that I'll run the exhaust inside the trunk and have two pipes exit on either side of the license plate. I'll use some 86 rear lights so I don't screw up a perfectly good set of 87 lights. |
10
I'll have to drill some holes to mount PCV and sensors. |
11
I installed the axles to see how far they stick out. Cool. Room for fender flares and 15"x10" wheels and tires! |
12
sticks way out there doesn't it?! |
13
Lots of room here. I cut up some 1/4" thick steel and drilled some holes. |
14
Here is another view from the interior. |
15
Here is the mount about half way done. |
16
While waiting for welder to cool down, I played with the RSe strut bar. Looks good. But it needs a new coat of paint. |
17
Looks good from this side as well. But I that coil pack looks mighty close. |
18
This is the cooling system surge tank. I like this so much better than the AW11 overflow container. I'll mount it here. But for now I'll hold it in with a tie-wrap. |
19
Ya, this is really close. I'll mount the coil pack to the rear of the firewall. That will allow the RSe strut bar to be used without modification. |
20
I ran out of wire for my MIG welder. I'll get some more in the morning when the Farm Store opens. |
21
Man I love the look of that filter! I'll make a bracket to hold it in place later. |
22
Overview of the project |
23
Looking through the passenger side vent hole. That is the engine mount. |
24
This package is just friggen huge! It will hang down pretty low. But will still have the same ground clearance as a regular MR2. |
25
Centered and ready to go. |
26
Hmm. I see a problem. |
27
The rear engine bolt holes will be used for the torque mount. |
28
So where do I mount the damn suspension???!!! F*%$!
Well I guess I needs to design a rear suspension. |
