Day 76 - 8/21/2004

Home

I decided to take a break from the Toystar. 8 months of working on it took its' toll on me. My day job is at its busiest in July and August. I have been getting lots of email from guys asking if I was still alive! Well I am. Just needed a break. I got some awesome cooling system help from Frank Parker. He is an Engineer for the Corvette C5R Raceteam that went to LeMans France. He also built the Northstar powered Corvair. The car is awesome and I learned so much from looking at the images he showed me.

I used 1.75 in water pipes to front routed thru a big water to oil heat exchanger mounted in front of motor. Used C5 corvette radiator and ac condenser. Just in process of tuning now but no problems cooling. Have 180 deg TS and it will idle all day with fans rarely coming on.
I did have a BIG problem getting all the air out of the system. Had a slug of air and could not get hot water to flow to front. Had to raise front of car and install a bleed on inlet side of pump to get rid of air.

Frank

I have decided to make some changes. Having the time off has allowed me to review some of my design and technical issues. Here are a few:

  1. Brakes
    • Rear
      • Replace the RX7 braking system with the larger Cadillac front brakes. Note that all mid-engine super cars have larger rear brakes then the front. I am not saying my car is a supercar, but the performance will be in that area. So the stopping power needs to be of equal performance. The smaller RX7 gear just wont be that good. I have obtained new hubs to I can use the Caddy calipers and rotors. I just need to get some new Porterfield pads. My welding on the cast hub scares me. It will work okay for street driving. But once the hub is heated from high speed driving it could become dangerous. GM makes good brake systems. They knew what they were doing when they designed it.
    • Front
      • I have aquired from Chico Race Works a set of 1993 calipers and brackets. I have new 1993 rotors. So now I have a complete brake system that should stop the car well from over 150 mph.
    • Master cylinder
      • I still don't understand this part of the car. I need to study some more
  2. Seats
    • The stock seats are just way to tall. My head hits the roll bar. I would not fit with a helmet. So Sparco Sprint seats were purchased. I will convert some MR2 seat brackets so the drivers seat will move fore and aft. The passenger seat will be bolted to the chassis as low as I can get it.
  3. Fuel Injectors
    • I sent all 8 injectors off to http://www.witchhunter.com/ to be cleaned and ballenced. They came back looking almost new. New filters, rubber and each injector is scribed with the cylinder number. You also get a printout of before and after. One thing I did find while researching injectors was the mother of all fuel injector lists. It is located here - http://users.erols.com/srweiss/tableifc.htm That link should be bookmarked by every junk yard junky out there! What I have done is take that database, convert it to an Excel file and upload it to my Compaq iPac (Palm). I can now have a quick reference to junk yard fuel injectors.

Here are the Sparco Seats. They are nice fit. I have lost 20 pounds just so I can fit in these bad boys.

The Northstar does not use torque specs, They state to turn it X degrees. Here is the degree thingy that I will need to put the heads black on.
