Day 51 - 4/25/2004

Home

Cloudy and cool today. Perfect weather to work in. Day 51 started out with me working on the roll cage. I can't do much more on it since the car is not on level ground. Which means I have to pull it into the garage. That is next weeks goal. This will also allow me to work on the car at night without getting eaten alive by bugs.

I pulled the crank pulley (Harmonic Ballencer per Cadillac) off. Electromotive is going to machine teeth in it so that the TEC3 will know where it is at when it fires the coils.I had no clue how hard it was to get the damn engine at TDC and the confirm it. There is not a mark on the outside of the engine to set timing as the Northstar is set via computer. Static timing is set at the factory and never changes.

Pulled the plugs today. 3 and 4 are thin as hell! 3 only had a few miles left before the tip blows off. This is what happens when you have no maintenance cars.

I pulled the harmonic ballancer off and boxed it up to send to Electromotive. They are going to add some teeth to the pulley so the TEC3 has something read. Now the problem is that the pulley is not keyed. So I needed to pull off the front engine plate, align all the gears and find TDC. Sounds easy.

3

Meet the oil pump. This needed to come off so I could find the timing marks.

Wow... I know this car is going to be fast now!!! LB. Actually stands for Left Bank. But MR2 OC Board members know what I was thinking :)

Here is the naked crank

I had to remove the cam cover to confirm TDC. Of course I was 180 off! Glad I did that.

8

Chains are just so much better!

9

Look at the base of the cam, how there is less metal than the nose. Very cool! Less metal equals less friction. Less HP loss. Gives me some ideas for my next 4AGE.

Fresh coat of some Plum Crazy

Much better looking than that conservative black.

Oh my gawd! See what happens when I get too many cans of one color!!!
