Day 43 - 4/7/2004

Home

Did some cutting and grinding over the past weekend. Got a bit done. received a few new parts in the mail, still waiting for some more. I ordered the CyberDyne Electric Digital Speedometer. I received it and read the instructions. It made no sense to me. It was like I was missing stuff. The description on the Jegs website stated that the gauge did 0-60 times, odometer, and much, much more. But it did not look like the gauge could do all that. So I found their phone number and gave them a call this morning. Not only does the gauge only do speed, but I need another $50 part to make it work. What was worse was the customer service rep mumbled on the phone and seemed disinterested in helping me out, like I was wasting her time. I was kinda pissed also that Jegs had the wrong info listed, and never stated I needed to purchase another expensive part to make the damn thing work. I was not happy.

I have a single wire alternator on the way. this will simplify my wiring in a large way. I am also waiting for the rest of the pipe for my exhaust system. Hopefully I will have it before the weekend.

Last Sunday I was able to get the starter wired and actually turned the key. Scared the crap out of me as I was not expecting such a deep scream from the starter. The regular 4age starter is pretty quiet. But this high torque monster may actually have more power than that little 1600cc 4-banger. So I the engine is okay. It spins. But I am still having difficulty getting the crank bolt loose. I need to send the crank pulley to Electromotive to have them machine the pick-up grooves into it. But damn... I can't get the bolt loose. I don't have air tools. And the wife looks at me with that look when I ask for a compressor. I even tried using the starter to loosen the damn thing. I don't know... maybe I'll just go out there one day and it will be loose.

I have been getting lots of email from people that are blown away with this project. Sorry that I can't answer all emails. I am getting over 400 emails a day. I read everyones mail. Thanks for the kind words and support. What I can't do is give you info on how to do your swaps or explain how things are done. I am sorry, but I don't really have the time to do my own stuff.

Now there has been comments about why it is taking so long. Well 43 days is actually pretty good for a project of this size. I thought in the beginning it would be pretty quick. But as you can see it has been a hell of a lot more work than I thought. I have had to reverse some decisions, like the motor mounts, and have had to redesign some things 3 or 4 times. But I have learned so much.

Here is part of the exhaust system. Still waiting for some more stuff from Jegs and Summit Racing. 3" pipe, 3" and 2.5" U bends, merge collector 2x 2.50" into 3", collector brackets and the Hooker AeroChamber muffler, 3" inlet and 2x 2.5 inch outlets.

2

The exhaust pipes will exit out of those two holes.

3

Today I welded up the merge collector. This is a much better design than the one I made.

4

4

I took my time welding it. I did not want to have any burn throughs. So it was low heat and squirt squirt squirt.

5

5

You don't realize how big 3" pipe is until you put it in. Little tiny trunk. That is why I needed to cut out the floor of the trunk. The whole exhaust system will fit in there. This will also leave room for some turbos at a later date.

6

That pipe will go into a 90 degree bend, then into a 180 and into the muffler.
