Day 38 - 3/12/2004

Home

Had the day off today. I tried to find a place that could do some bodywork, custom flares, and paint the car. Well everyone I went to did not want to do it. We have a local shop here in Charlottsville, the owner used to live next door to me, but has since retired. He was known as one of the best shops in town for what I wanted done. But his son has taken over the shop. He did not want to do it. His excuse was that he can't make money out of it. He did not even ask if I had the money to pay for it. He just saw that I had an import car and wanted it painted. He just blew me off. I really bet that if I had a Mustang that needed the same work that he would have been all over it. What really sucked was waiting in his waiting room for over an hour to see him, to make an appointment to spend money, and when he finally got to the shop he did not want my money. Well JC Body Shop... you wont get my money ever.

Rant over.

1

Got me a new battery at AutoZone. This is good because I have a stack of old batteries that has one less now. Makes wife happy.

2

2

This is the battery tray I cut out way back on day 3.

3

I worked out the rear brake system. This is the Caddy hub. I cut the GM brake ears off and welded on 1/4 steel plates to mount the Mazda RX7 rear brake calipers on. It was much easier to do than I thought it would be. I am using the RX7 rotor. It will need some modifications to to fit. I ordered some new rotors from www.rockauto.com and will drop them off at the machine shop.

4

4

The RX7 caliper is lighter than the MK1 MR2 rear caliper and it has an e-brake. I need that to pass the Virginia vehicle inspection. It also looks cool as hell with the cooling fins.

5

5

I have temporary bolts holding it in. I'll get some new grade 8 bolts.

6

6

That last image the caliper is a crooked because the bolts are not tight. This one is. Everything lines up correctly. I will get some Porterfield brake pads at a later date along with new Goodridge brake lines.

7

7

It fits with plenty of room for air flow.

8

They actually look pretty good in there. These are about 1/2 the weight of the Caddy brakes that I was going to use.

9

I also welded in the old battery tray in the front trunk. I will make a battery hold down for it another day.

10

It turned out a little crooked. I was a bit pissed. But it is not bad. I just wont show people.
