Day 117- 12/10/2006

Three more days and I turn 44 years old. That just seems so old. I still have so much to do with my life. Like get this car done!

I spent Saturday at Virginia International Raceway (VIR). What a nice track! Reminds me a lot of Brands Hatch in England. Mainly the elevation changes. There was a Chin Motorsports track day weekend and we got invited out my some of our club members. Got a ride in a Porsche 911 and a twin turbo Toyota Supra. The Supra was unreal fast. So smooth in its power delivery and handling. We were hitting between 145 and 150 on the back straight. Then stnding on the brakes to slow for the downhill esses. The 911 Carrera was also fast. Not brutaly fast like the Supra, but smooth fast. We were hitting 135 on the back, but the owner was braking a lot earlier than the Supra. Both cars were fun, and got me really motovated. You need good car weekends like that every now and then! My son, who is now six had a blast as well. He thought it would be boring, but afterwards said it was awesome. He really enjoyed the turbo cars blowing flames. He got to see a Miata pin wheel into a tirewall and look at the carnage up close afterwards. He really liked the Lamborgini Diablo that was there. Bright yellow. He was fascinated with the way the doors opened. My favorite car there was this orange Porsche 914 GT3 car. The sound was just so unreal.

My friends at CDOC have a track side store there. They started out in Charlottesville back in 2002 and have grown to the largest performace shop on the east coast. Great group of guys and gals that know their stuff. I purchased a ton of Longacre Weatherpack wiring kits along with the crimp gun for them. Need those to start wiring this car soon.

So Sunday morning was spent working on the rear suspension. I used a hole saw to cut a two inch hole in the lower control arm mount I welded up on the sub-frame. This allows the lower control arm to fit in the mount and for it to move up and down and side to side. Then I went to work on the strut. I cut a 3" diameter exhaust pipe in half. It is about 5 inches long.

I then cut the chassis rail and welded in the 1/2 pipe. This allows the strut to move up and down without hitting the chassis rail. I can now get some pretty mean camber on the rear tire. I had to cut off the sway bar tab and the brake line tab on the strut. I'll find other ways of making those work later. The drivers side is done.

I used the big bolt from a 87 MR2 up top and the smaller 86 bolt on the bottom. This allows the strut to tilt back and allows me to get good camber range.
