Day 101 - 02/27/2005

NA2005

I have been very busy the last couple of weeks with my real job and the MR2OC Message Board. Winter is our busiest time as people are locked in their homes due to weather. So keeping the place running for 18,000 members is like a full time job. Plus last weekend was Daytona. Bill does not work during Daytona!

I also have been trying to work out some major problems with our front suspension. It was discovered by Jim King, who is building a MK1.5 turbo MR2 using the same front end setup as me, that the car would not track straight, and that it wanted to turn right or left by itself. Due to the geometry of the hubs it is like pushing a shopping basket backwards. We turned the hubs around and that was our mistake. So I am going to swap them around, and install a new MK2 MR2 manual steering rack, mounting in front of the hubs. This will require a new steering column. I have a couple of choices picked out at Speedway Motors
Column with turn signals
Column with nothing, custom length and uber-light

The last one is probably my choice as I can save a load of weight with this part, plus the custom legth will allow me to reach the new rack.

The weather has been pretty bad here with snow and rain. But I did get a few things done today.

1

1

My father found me an engine dyno for me.

2

2

Man, this is so cool, now I can test engines before blowing them up!

1

3

This will be the focal point to the new shop that we will start building this summer

2

4

I swear the welds look sooo much better in person! I had not defunked the tabs yet after stick welding. I am actually getting pretty good at it and prefer stick to using the mig for big jobs.

1

5

Here are the new toe control mounts. I moved them up into the same location as the old FWD steering rack was.

2

6

The longer aluminum rod.

1

7

I actually removed the lower nut and dropped the heim joint to the base, which brought the bar more inline with the lower control arm. I was running out of battery due to the cold, so I did not want to waste images.

2

8

Here are the MK2 MR2 bushings I got from TwosRus

I moddified them to fit on the Cadillac suspension.

2

10

And they worked like a charm!

1

11

Here is the oil filter adaptor I picked up off of e-bay. It has the oil cooler line bungs built in. Now I am going to have my dad make me a oil cooler of my own design. More on that later

2

12

Started the cooling pipe runs. I thought the pipes would run easier. But I am having to put small bends in them to clear the fuel tank and the tunnel.

1

13

I cut the frame section out. This clears the way for the bigger coolant pipes.

2

14

Both pipes temporarily installed.

then the camera died.
